September 11, 2001 is a day all of us will remember. I was at our apartment in downtown St. John's pregnant with our first child. I grew up in Outer Cove and planes always went over certain parts of our community because we were so close to the airport. On September 11th as I watched Kelly and Regis live I knew my dad and my uncle were out fishing off Outer Cove ( my parents still live there.) As I was watching TV that morning our lives were not to be the same again. The first plane went into the building everyone thought it was an accident me included. But when the second plane came we knew that this was something that would impact us for the rest of our lives. In the mean time my dad ( who has a great fear of flying but is in awe of the fact "that those big machines can stay in the air") was noticing something odd over Outer Cove. First the large plane that looked like it was a little to low- and dad noticed right away. Then the next plane which dad noticed wasn't one of the "regulars." Then there just came more and more planes from all over and in every direction. Dad tells us he knew something was happening but at that time with no cell phone and out in the Atlantic he had no idea what. Dad got so concerned he stopped his fishing trip and he and his brother decided to make their way in as more and more planes made their way to the airport. When they made it to the wharf the news reached them immediately and the shock of it all took hold. The planes were the ones being redirected from the US to St. John's Airport and I'm sure dad was one of the first to know the impact it would have on our beautiful province and the world.
