Long Distance Marriage

By Cobie Power

For 4 straight years my now husband and I are at the St. John's airport twice every other month. We are there so often some of the ticket people know his face and comment every time we are there. We met downtown one weekend night. It was then that he and his friends came over to George Street for a lads getaway. He came back a month later to see me and has been doing so for 4 years. Last year we got married quickly because I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer. So rare in fact there is no doctor in Canada has ever treated it. So our plan was to stop all these trips and settle here to focus on my treatment. Sadly bc of my diagnosis I was not able to sponsor him into the country as I could not work. So he took some time off of work and stayed for months. But after 6 months he had to return and as a married couple we are still doing the back and forth from YYT to LHR. Nothing makes me happier then heading to the airport to pick him up. We will be doing this still for another few years until it becomes possible for one of us to sponsor the other. So I still look forward to the trips to YYT and will continue to enjoy each and every visit because it means that I get to be with the love of my life again no matter the length of time.
